New Program Aims to Level the Playing Field for Developers of Color

Buying Back the Block on Cleveland’s East Side

Along East 73rd Street and Detour Avenue in Cleveland, you'll find homes holding on for dear life. These aging structures have become eyesores in the East Side community, but a group of best friends is determined to buy back the block. Richard Singleton, Jermaine Brooks, and Will Levy, the founders of WRJ Developers, are making strides in the real estate industry right here in Northeast Ohio.

Our Journey

We first introduced our vision in 2020, transforming shipping containers into affordable housing. Despite the innovative approach, the journey has been challenging. As Brooks shared, “We started and concentrated on duplexes because we kept getting told 'no' on apartment buildings due to our resumé and funding.”

Breaking Through Barriers

Our breakthrough came with support from Cleveland Development Advisors (CDA). This pivotal partnership has now inspired the launch of the Cleveland Equitable Development Initiative, an eight-month training program designed to mentor, support, and create more opportunities for entrepreneurs of color.

The Initiative

William Willis, Senior Director of Development Services at CDA, highlights the initiative’s goals: “When you see the developments that meet the needs of the community and are reflective of the community, hopefully, people will get on board and gain approval for these projects.”

Looking Ahead

With the continued support from CDA and our community, WRJ Developers is committed to revitalizing Cleveland’s East Side, one innovative project at a time.
